Cadillac to join F1 grid in 2026
Formula 1 has announced that the 2026 season will feature a new addition to the great challenge of the change in regulations that the teams and drivers will face: Cadillac will join the grid. After several years of attempts by the American team, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and F1 have officially announced its entry. There will now be 11 teams on the grid, something that has not happened since 2016.
Cadillac will be fielding Ferrari engines in 2026, a key detail that connects the American brand with the Italian powerhouse. Although the American brand has integrated into F1 in a different way to other firms, its arrival is marked not only by its support for the new regulations, but also by its ambition to establish itself as a strong competitor in the championship. This expansion of the grid is a sign of F1's global growth, which has been boosted by the growing influence of the United States in the category, with more races taking place on city circuits such as Miami and Las Vegas.
Cadillac's entry into Formula 1 comes against a backdrop of change, as the 2026 season will bring with it new regulations that promise to change the course of the competition. Adrian Newey, one of Formula 1's leading designers, mentioned that the new engine regulations will significantly change the landscape. ‘There will be an engine formula that will be imposed, and I can't remember another time when everything has been changed like this. The chassis will be redesigned to compensate for the new power unit,’ Newey explained.
Aside from the technical aspect, the question of drivers is up in the air. Rumours suggest that Sergio Perez, who is out of Red Bull for 2025, is one of the most talked-about names to join the Cadillac team. Perez's ties to the United States and his Formula 1 experience could be decisive, as well as bringing commercial appeal to the team. There is also talk of bringing in local drivers, with names such as IndyCar star Colton Herta.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed his delight at Cadillac's arrival in Formula 1: ‘This is a transformational moment. I am proud to have led this step in the championship. The expansion of the teams strengthens the mission to take motorsport to the highest level and will surely inspire future competitors.
