The 20 Best Universities in the United States to Study Law in 2026

Edition 2026

Preliminary Note: Ranking Methodology

The preparation of this ranking has been based on a combined analysis of different aspects that help us better understand each university and the education it provides. We have examined their curricula, the structure of their programmes and the way each institution organises teaching, paying particular attention to the quality and up-to-date nature of the content, as well as its connection to students’ needs and the challenges facing society.

We have also taken into account the teaching methods, resources and facilities available at each university. These elements help shape the environment in which academic life takes place and can directly influence students’ experiences. In addition, we have reviewed information published on the institutions’ own websites, their news and their presence in the media, as complementary ways to understand their initiatives, development and the image they project.

The analysis has been complemented by exploratory consultations conducted on a random basis among young people and students. The aim was to understand how they perceive the education they receive and what they think of the university they attend. These impressions offer a perspective rooted in students’ everyday experiences and complement the examination of institutional information. We have also considered, as supplementary material, assessments and references produced by other institutions and specialised organisations, without allowing them to replace our own analysis.

The competitiveness of universities and their ability to respond to current academic and professional demands also form part of the assessment. However, we believe that the quality of an institution cannot be measured solely by its market position, resources or international profile. We have therefore chosen to pay particular attention to the human dimension: honesty, a humanistic approach to education, ethics, learning and the transmission of values.

In our view, a university fully fulfils its purpose when, in addition to preparing students for professional practice, it contributes to their personal and civic development. Academic excellence is inseparable from responsibility, respect, critical thinking and the ability to act with integrity. With this approach, the ranking seeks to offer a broad view of universities, considering both the strength of their educational offering and the principles that guide the education they provide.

Editorial selection criteria

Stanford tops the inaugural ranking prepared by Impact Lawyers of the best universities in the United States to study law. Yale and Harvard take second and third place, respectively, while New York University, the University of Chicago and Columbia complete the top six.

To prepare this ranking looking ahead to 2026, Impact Lawyers has developed an editorial selection aimed at highlighting the educational and academic track record of the leading law schools in the United States.

This assessment is based on a review of the public information offered by the institutions themselves, examining their academic programmes, curricula, teaching methodologies, legal clinics, specialisations, international opportunities, research resources and systems for preparing for professional practice.

This approach makes it possible to consider not only the prestige of each law school but also its particular understanding of legal education: the kind of lawyer it seeks to develop, the importance it attaches to legal reasoning and practical experience, the way it addresses technological and social challenges and the extent to which it connects academic training with professional practice.

Complementary analytical perspectives

The different aspects considered make it possible to examine legal education from complementary academic, professional, and international perspectives. This circumstance, far from constituting a limitation, allows for a more balanced view of the university landscape.

Career placement and access to the legal profession

In the US legal market, graduate employment outcomes, passing the bar exam, admissions selectivity, law school reputation, and available resources are of particular importance.

International Perspective

An international perspective makes it possible to particularly value academic reputation, the standing of universities among employers, and the impact of research output.

Teaching, Research and International Outlook

Furthermore, key areas of consideration include teaching quality, the research environment, research performance, collaboration with industry and institutions, and the international outlook of each university.

The combination of these criteria prevents the ranking from depending exclusively on a single conception of excellence. One law school may stand out for graduate employability, another for its international academic influence and another for the quality of its research or teaching system. The Impact Lawyers ranking seeks to integrate all these dimensions into a joint assessment.

The Impact Lawyers methodology

The editorial selection considers these different educational dimensions to reflect the academic offering and the particularities of each institution in the final result.

To provide a coherent overview, the selection is restricted exclusively to institutions in the United States, considering their track record and academic offering in the Impact Lawyers ranking.

Within this framework, direct attention is paid to the professional orientation of the programmes and the preparation of those pursuing a Juris Doctor. In this selection, Duke ranks tenth and Michigan eleventh, both with distinctive academic offerings.

The selection of law schools is complemented by an editorial review of the programmes and educational models of the highlighted universities. This perspective allows the differences between institutions to be contextualised and provides a more comprehensive view of their respective educational offerings.

Among the elements examined are the structure and flexibility of the Juris Doctor programme; the combination of required and elective courses; the importance attached to the case method, legal reasoning and interdisciplinary education; the availability of legal clinics and externships; available specialisations; research opportunities; preparation for the bar exam; links with law firms, companies, courts and public authorities; internationalisation; and the incorporation of technology and artificial intelligence into legal education.

The review also considered each institution's educational philosophy, understood as the model of lawyer it seeks to develop rather than as an assessment of its political or ideological orientation.

Based on these educational criteria, the presence of institutions such as Vanderbilt in this selection reflects the strength of its academic offering and its track record in American legal education, leading to the individual analysis of the law schools that make up this editorial selection.

Stanford: Interdisciplinary Education and Professional Prospects

Stanford takes first place in this editorial selection. Its comprehensive approach combines academic prestige, teaching quality, research and professional outcomes.

Its educational model is characterised by flexibility, interdisciplinarity and the connection between law and fields such as technology, business, public policy and innovation. Its proximity to the Silicon Valley ecosystem further strengthens its position in areas related to intellectual property, technology regulation and entrepreneurship.

Yale and Harvard: two models of excellence

Yale University

Yale occupies second place in this selection. The institution stands out for its academic track record and its educational model, establishing itself as a benchmark in legal education.

Its model is especially linked to research, legal theory, academic training, and access to positions of institutional responsibility. The small size of its classes and the close relationship between students and professors are some of the features traditionally associated with its educational system.

Harvard University

Harvard ranks third in this selection. The faculty stands out for its educational track record and its established impact in the academic and professional spheres.

Harvard's scale enables it to offer one of the broadest and most diverse academic offerings. Its programme combines a strong general legal education with numerous specialisations, clinics, research centres and international opportunities. Its alumni network and presence in the main legal, business and political spheres maintain the institution as a global benchmark.

NYU, Chicago and Columbia complete the leading group

New York University

New York University occupies fourth place and confirms its status as one of the most solid law schools from an international perspective, supported by its global reach and the high competitiveness of its legal programmes.

University of Chicago

The University of Chicago ranks in fifth place in this selection. Its educational model is distinguished by intellectual rigour and the connection between law, economics and institutional analysis, complemented by a solid academic and professional track record.

Columbia University

Columbia appears in sixth place. Its New York location, its relationship with major law firms and financial markets, and its specialisation in corporate and international law characterise its academic offering.

Berkeley and Georgetown Consolidate Their Position

This editorial perspective makes it possible to clearly appreciate those universities whose academic profile and impact stand out in different areas of legal education.

University of California, Berkeley

The University of California, Berkeley, occupies eighth place in the Impact Lawyers ranking, with a track record characterized by the strength of its academic and research work.

Georgetown University

Something similar happens with Georgetown University, which ranks 13th in the classification, consolidating its prestige in the US university landscape.

Its location in Washington, D.C., and its proximity to federal institutions, regulatory agencies, courts and international organisations are particularly important features of its educational model.

No single university is perfect for every student

The ranking provides a general assessment of academic excellence, but a higher position does not necessarily make an institution the best choice for every student.

The decision should take into account the area of law in which they intend to specialise, the state in which they wish to practise, tuition fees, available scholarships, debt levels, the employment rate and opportunities to work in major law firms, companies, the public sector, the judiciary, academia or international organisations.

It is also fundamental to distinguish between the different legal programmes. In the United States, law is not normally studied as an initial undergraduate degree equivalent to the Spanish model.

Juris Doctor

Those wishing to practise as lawyers will generally complete an undergraduate degree before entering a Juris Doctor programme, which normally takes three years of full-time study.

Master of Laws (LLM)

Universities also offer Master of Laws or LLM programmes, generally aimed at people who already hold a law degree, including numerous lawyers and international students.

The Impact Lawyers ranking should therefore be understood primarily as a ranking of the best U.S. law schools in which to pursue a Juris Doctor, although the educational aspects addressed also allow the overall quality of their postgraduate, research and specialization programmes to be appreciated.

A broader view of legal excellence

The principal conclusion is that university legal excellence cannot be reduced to a single criterion. Stanford leads this editorial selection, while Yale, Harvard, NYU, Chicago and Columbia represent different training models oriented toward different professional profiles.

The consideration of the different training models and the analysis of the academic offerings of the universities make it possible to offer a broader and more useful perspective of the United States legal education system.
